Exclusive Interview with Tony Bonnici of The Prairie Oysters

The Prairie Oysters

About The Prairie Oysters

Why country music ?
~ Its honesty really. It’s all about the stories in the lyrics, the many styles we can explore from folk right through to blues/rock. But most importantly, it’s fun, down to earth music played by and listened to by fun, down to earth people.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Hey we thought this quiz was easy!! Wow… Patsy Cline and Hank Williams

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ When The Dust Settles. This was our very first single but more importantly we wrote this song about the drought and the tough times it brought for our farmers. We wrote the song and it was adopted by the charity Aussie Helpers for its fundraising campaigns.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Steve Earle and Paul Kelly

Whisky wine beer or water?
~ Yes please :))

What is the question interviewers never asked you while you were always hoping they would. (and give us your answer)?
~ What do you think of Country Music today?
Answer: We love listening to independent and alternative country artists. They’re out there doing it on their own not having to answer to a major record label. There’s good commercial country music out there, but the industry is way too focussed on image and trying way too hard to get it to cross into the mainstream scene and risking the loss of its identity.

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ OK now we’re talking :)) The studio would be a cross between Sun Studios and Abbey Road. The studio would have a stack of vintage guitar and bass amps a vintage Ludwig drum kit, upright piano and cupboard full of RCA 77DX ribbon mics, Electrovoice RE20’s, Neumann U87s, KM84s. The control room would be analog with a Neve analog desk with real VU metering, a Studer 24-Track recorder and two Studer Stereo Tape Machines. Good old Urei Compressors, an AKG Reverb plate the size of a room and verious vinatage analog tape echo’s. This is what we were brought up on before digital came along and made us lose the artform.

Johnny or June ?
~ Both God love ‘em 🙂

Give us your top 3 country songs ever.
~ Lights On The Hill – Slim Dusty
   Blue Train – Johnny Cash
   Crazy – Patsy Cline

We love to bring our readers exclusive scoops, so what would you like to share with our readers ?
~ We are currently in rehearsals for a brand new show that will feature something different to what we normally do. Can’t say too much but when it hits the road, let’s just say it’s our way of showing just how much we love playing country music. Are you confused? Good.. Hehehehe.
