Exclusive Interview with The Wolfe Brothers

The Wolfe Brothers

About The Wolfe Brothers

Why country music ?
~ Nick Wolfe: I’ve always loved how a really good country song can take you to a place in the mind that’s so vivid it’s almost like you’re in the song. I’m a fan of many different musical genres but there’s nothing quite like a great country song to paint a picture in the mind and take you somewhere else.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included), which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Nick Wolfe: Hard question! There have been so many amazing singers in country music over the years. I’m just gonna go with two of my favourites Tim McGraw and Eric Church. They both have a great character to their voices and you really believe what they are singing.

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ Nick Wolfe: Another hard question, I really like performing “Ain’t Even Close To Gone” We’re very proud of where we come from and no matter where we go in the world, our heart is always there. I think that song says that perfectly.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Nick Wolfe: I really love the writing of Josh Thompson, he wrote Jason Aldean’s recent single “Any Old Barstool” I really love how he manages to write songs that sound current and in the now, but still have that timeless country feel. He’s a fantastic writer.

How would you like to spend a day with each other when you were not allowed to make music or to talk about music?
~ Nick Wolfe: It’s pretty rare that we actually spend a day together completely unrelated to music. We’re all pretty big cricket fans, a big day out at cricket match with a few beers involved I imagine would be a lot of fun. We also all just love dogs haha, maybe we should hold a Wolfe Bros dog walk day.

Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ Nick Wolfe: I’m not going to name any names but basically any song that you can tell has been thrown together chasing a current trend but lacks depth and substance. I like all types of country, old and new, pop, country rock, traditional. I believe there’s always good and bad songs regardless of the sub genre. It’s foolish to block out a certain sub genre entirely, you’re basically closing your mind and blocking out a heaps of great songs to yourself.

What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ Tom Wolfe: I’ve racked my brain all day for this one question. I think I have never been asked “What would you like to do if music wasn’t your career?” To be completely honest I don’t really know what I would do. But I think it would have to involve being creative and working with people. Maybe some form of Architect or designer. Something where I could be creative and express myself.

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ Nick Wolfe: In this day and age, through technology sadly studios are becoming rarer and rarer. And while its fantastic that great software and the ability to capture great sound is becoming more accessable at home, I think the great studios have history. Perhaps a freakishly great sounding space, or some great vintage gear or even just a killer vibe that inspires the artist.

Johnny or June ?
~ Tom Wolfe: John or June? Left or Right? Stop or Go? Up and Down? One is not complete without the other. Johnny needed June to walk the line and June needed John to fall into his ring of fire. They both needed each other to be the best person they could be in life. And didn’t they do it right!

Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ Nick Wolfe: There’s always an element of nerves involved, I find what happens to me is that when I’m nervous I’m not truly in the moment. I’m thinking about the next song, or what I’m going to say to the audience next, or how my guitar is sounding. It’s taken me years but recently I’ve found that just accepting the moment regardless of what it is like and just focusing on that moment makes me perform better as I’m not worrying about factors beyond my control.

What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ Nick Wolfe: We’ve been truly lucky to experience so many great memories through the band. But one that comes to mind is our first real show in the USA. It was in a little town in Ohio called Trenton. We were completely out of our comfort zone, no body really knew who we were but for some reason we just connected. We were so appreciative of being in the American heartland playing and they really appreciated that we’d come from the other side of the world to play them our version of what essentially is an American form of music.
