Exclusive Interview with Angie Bruyere
Why country music ?
~ I mean, Country Music just speaks to my soul. It’s the place for me to find true authenticity in music. The kindness, the sadness, the honesty and the joys and sorrow of real lfe all woven together by some magical melodic thread. Yeah, it just really touches me.
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ That’s such a hard question for me because of the endless possibilities, so let’s go with the first to pop in my head. Even though he’s not considered Country, I’d love to hear Louis Armstrong’s voice in a duet with Emmylou Harris. Crazy, right? How beautiful would that sound!
What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ I think that the song that means the most to me has to be my song Smile off of the Blood Like Wine EP. I wrote it about my best friend who passed away in a drunk driving accident while on the road with her band Betty Blowtorch years ago. Her name was Bianca and she was a beautiful soul that helped many people in her 10 years of sobriety up until the day that she was taken from us. Yeah, it’s a tough one for me to sing sometimes still….
Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Oh wow, I’d love Willie Nelson to write a song for me!!!! He is one of my favorite artists that ever was and will be, as far as I’m concerned.
What is the one thing that readers/fans would be surprised to know about you?
~ Hmmmm, I guess that they may be surprised to know that my first inspiration for songwriting was when my mother took me to see the musical Little Orphan Annie when I was 10…ha, yup. Not the coolest answer, perhaps, but it’s the truth.
Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ I’m sorry that I can’t think of any country song, but I can tell you that I’d be okay to not hear Steely Dan anymore! Haha. So mean, I know, and they’re so talented!! But man something about it just puts me in a bad mood. People are going to get so mad at me for that, but hey, you can’t appeal to everybody, right??
What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ Trump or Hillary….I love a good political debate!! It makes some people so uncomfortable, but if you know your facts and pay attention to what’s going on in the world, I feel it’s important to do your part and get out there and vote and help make the change that you want to see in this world for the generations to come.
Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ Muscle Shoals sounds like it has everything that I love in a recording studio! Amazing history, vibe and an old Neve board. May have to go check that out one of these days. We’re recording our next record right here in Topanga in our living room….trying to capture that live, real canyon vibe that we live up here.
Johnny or June ?
~ Johnny for me all the way!!! I mean, come on, he’s the man in black! He’s the burning ring of fire!
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ You know, to be honest, it really all depends. Most of the time I’m cool before going on stage, but every once in a while I can get a little nervous energy going on. Usually the more intimate the show it is or perhaps when I’m introducing a new song or something? Luckily I always have my best friend Jack Daniels to help me calm my nerves when the need arises. Only one though! Okay, maybe 2. (;
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ Well I’m not a big fan of namedropping, but if I’m to answer this question truthfully, my most memorable musical moment has got to be when I was back stage at the Stones hanging with my X husband in Keith’s room and the guys (albeit Mick) all came in to warm up before the show and they sang to me Far Away Eyes and Angie. I mean, for a girl like me it doesn’t get better than that. Okay, so I guess that’s not the most memorable day in MY musical career, per say, but as a musician, it doesn’t get more inspirational and memorable than that.
