Why country music ?
~ Starting off deep, haha! Why not country music?! It’s what I’ve always loved most, and I love that I can have my roots in country and still find ways to incorporate other genres into the music that I create too. I like that it’s about simple, everyday life events that people can easily relate to but that can also be described in so many different and beautiful ways!
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Can I include myself in this answer?? Because for me, the ultimate duet would definitely have to be between me and Dolly Parton! She’s one of my favorites. There are so many others I’d love to sing with! Two other epic moments for me would probably be doing duets with Journey and/or Stevie Wonder. Any of those three would be so much fun for me!
What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ I love all the songs I record! They’re like my little babies. But I think if I had to pick one it would be “Before It’s Too Late”, one of the songs off of my self-titled EP. I think it’s because so many people relate to that song. I’ve even had people tell me that it made them cry, or it made them think about someone that used to be a big part in their lives. Having something I’ve written and created affect people that way is the coolest thing as a songwriter.
Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Oh man, there are so many great songwriters out there! Right now though, my top pick would be Brandy Clark. She has written some of the best songs that I think fit my style. She writes things that are smart and sassy but still full of real emotion. I think she’d be able to come up with something that would fit me perfectly!
What is the one thing that readers/fans would be surprised to know about you?
~ Oh man…I would say that it’s that I have really bad road rage. 🙂
Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ I really don’t have any songs that I never want to hear on the radio again. I’m happy for all of the artists that have songs out on radio right now! There are some good jams that have been coming out lately!
What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ Hmm, that’s a good question! I’ve never been asked this question before, haha. I really don’t know. I feel like they usually hit everything! It would be cool to be asked more about my live show, just because performing live and having that interaction with the audience is one of my favorite parts of being in music! I don’t know what the questions might be, but that’s something I’d like to talk about more, because I love it so much, and it’s so much of who I am as an entertainer.
Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ Big, super comfy with relaxing vibes. Just a place I feel at home in. I think that when I’m comfortable in the studio I can really stretch the limits and create good music! (Oh, and a place with good snacks!)
Johnny or June ?
~ Hmmm, I would say both. I feel like sometimes I have the grace and sass of June, but I also have the intensity and attitude of Johnny. And really, what would country music be if we hadn’t had them both??
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ I’ve been performing on stage since I was 4, so at this point I actually don’t get very nervous anymore. I get more anxious and excited more than anything! I don’t think I have any rituals. The only thing I do before every show is talk to the band and try to get us all pumped! That’s pretty much it!
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ Right now, it’s surely releasing my self-titled EP! A close second would be getting to sing on stage with Lady Antebellum. Those were both high moments for me that made me proud of what I have been working towards and proud to be in country music. The Lady Antebellum moment gave me a sneak peek at what I want to work towards, to get to perform on those big stages and have people singing every word back to me, but releasing my EP was my first big chance to create and share something that showcased who I am as an artist. But ask me this question again in five years, maybe there will be a lot more memorable days to come!
