Why country music ?
~ Because the story telling is so powerful. And also because I admire so many country artists and the work they’ve done. So many country artists have inspired me to follow my own dreams.
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ That’s a REALLY good question! I think I would have to say Patsy Cline and, I know he’s not country, but Elvis Presley. I think that duet would be LEGENDARY.
What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ My song “This Is My Time” definitely means the most to me. I wrote it about my experience with bullying and it’s a song that really helped me through a very difficult time in my life. And I’ve also had several people tell me that it’s helped them get through a rough patch in their life too, so that makes it even more meaningful to me!
You write on your site that you have an obsession with Disney movies. Who is you favorite Disney character and tell us why?
~ That’s a REALLY tough question! haha Well, I think my top 2 are Ariel and Merida. Obviously because of the red hair! haha but I love Ariel because of her amazing voice! And I love Merida because she was the first Disney Princess that DIDN’T NEED a Prince. She ignored tradition and her whole culture and followed her heart, which I find very admirable.
Whisky wine beer or water?
~ STARBUCKS! Or root beer! haha I’m not really a fan of alcohol I’ve tried a few things since I turned 21 but I haven’t really liked the taste of anything.
What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ I have a very slight stutter. And it’s been a very difficult thing to deal with throughout my life. I would LOVE to educate people more about stuttering, because there seem to be a few misconceptions. I want an interviewer to ask me: “If you could educate people about stuttering, and about what to do and what not to do when encountering a person who stutters, what would you tell them?” And I would say: I think the first thing people need to know when talking to people who stutter is to try not to act uncomfortable. I know it can be kind of awkward but if you look nervous or uncomfortable, then you’re just going to make the stutterer feel more anxious. And a big one is, when a stutterer is having a hard time getting a word out, people think it’s a good idea to finish a sentence for them. And it’s a very nice gesture, but it makes the stutterer feel like a ‘failure’ or like ‘they can’t do anything right.’ Just act normal! Even though people stutter and talk differently than you do, doesn’t change the fact that we’re people too.
If you could turn back time to make only one change, what would you change?
~ Nothing. Everything I’ve done in my life has brought me to exactly where I am today. And, even though I have bad days, I’m pretty proud of the growth I’ve made throughout my life.
Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ I haven’t had the opportunity to record in a lot of studios, but I was lucky enough to record at Blackbird Studio in Nashville, TN and it was INCREDIBLE. It has everything you could ever want in a recording studio and the decor and the vibe are just so cool and laid back.
Johnny or June ?
~ Without June, there would be no Johnny. And without Johnny there would be no June. I can’t possibly pick just one! The two of them were magical together.
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm your nerves?
~ Well, I do have some anxiety so I always get a little nervous before going on stage. But I think it’s totally natural to be a little nervous before a show. I’ve worked really hard to overcome my anxiety and I’ve come really far so, at this point in my life, my nerves are more “excited nerves.” I typically jump around a lot and dance randomly backstage to get some of the nerves out. Being goofy helps me a lot, life is just more fun that way haha
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ I’m always having more new and amazing experiences in my musical career. But I think the day that someone told me that hearing my song, “This Is My Time”, convinced them not to hurt themselves or commit suicide is not only one of the best days of my musical career, but it’s just one of the best days of my life. Period.
