Why country music ?
~ I have always loved country music, from listening to it as a child at home, from Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Dolly, the sublime Jonny Cash and I was completely obsessed with Bonnie Raitt !! – they just all always sounded so magical to me, telling stories in their songs in a way I didn’t hear in pop music,… and the Grand Ole Oprey was like a wonderland of music, I just wanted to sing like them!.
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Johnny Cash and Bonnie Raitt for me please.
What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ Wow – this is difficult to answer…there are quite a few really personal songs…but probably Truly Heavenly, Stop The Clock and Ivory Moon – just because they are all about my son, who means the world to me – although he hates them all – because they are about him!!!
Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Bonnie Raitt, or Gretchen Peters, PLEASE 🙂
How would you like to spend a day with each other when you were not allowed to make music or to talk about music?
~ hmmm – a music free day – OK, that would be going to the gym, cooking a meal for my gang, chilling out with a book for a few hours, and then eating, drinking and hanging out in the hot tub with good friends and family. Perfect day off.
Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ ‘Achey breaky heart’ – ugh!!! I can’t stand it, just so annoying – need I say more?!
What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ What superpower would I have if I was a super hero – and the answer would definitely be instant transportation. I hate travelling! – not great for touring, I realise that….I get by, but its not my favourite way to spend time – so would love to be able to transport instantly to anywhere!
Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ Pretty much where I record – TJ Tunes in Nashville! – lots of different spaces, great sound, set in lovely woodlands, great engineer and atmosphere – what more could I ask?
Johnny or June ?
~ Johnny – because he IS the greatest country singer of all time – his voice is honey, his delivery heart stopping and his dark, moody, gorgeous looks!.
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ Yes, very. annoyingly. I steam with an old fashioned Nelsons inhaler to calm me down and it helps my throat relax, ….and I try to leave it until the last minute to get ready before I go on stage, as that’s when it really starts to kick in, just as I am about to go on…but I’m usually fine once I start.
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ Playing Hammersmith Apollo, supporting British singer/songwriter Sophie Ellis Bextor – was just a great iconic venue to play, and a brilliant crowd……and also hearing Nashville CD mastered for the first time – it finally felt like I had got onto a CD what I felt inside – and that was a great feeling.
