Interview Published: August 1, 2019
Pensacola Beach, Florida, USA
Why country music ?
~ The standard for lyrics is higher. I feel comfortable with the rules of writing for country. I grew up in the south and love southern rock and the history behind country music.
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Johnny and June and they did it so so well. A duet is more than the songs or even the harmonies. Its the stories of the duet partners. Its the web they weave.
What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ The one that breaks me out. I would love for that song to be Girls of Summer because that song is who I am.
Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Shane Mcanelly he is so awesome. I’m a Belmont student and everyday on my way to class I walk by Smack Songs and think…. one day!!!
What is the one thing that readers/fans would be surprised to know about you?
~ When I was 2 I fell and almost cut the tip of my nose off and scarred my face up pretty bad. I developed speech impediments and was bullied about the scars. I became incredibly introverted and began to write little songs in my head to express my thoughts and feelings. I was bullied about that too eventually… always singing things because I didn’t feel comfortable talking. When I was 12 I was told by Macy Gray I was a natural songwriter and she explained to me what that was. And oddly enough despite my uneven bumpy nose and facial scars people look and at me and think I am pretty. I don’t even think they notice the scars anymore. I am the only one who after all those years of being called scarface who still sees them.
Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ Everyone loves their own baby and I support every person’s art.
What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would?
~ I’m not often asked about my work history and ethic. I have performed live on stage over 1200 times because I love performing so much.
Describe the ultimate recording studio
~ The one that can will produce my songs the way I hear them in my head.
Johnny or June ?
~ Johnny because he came from no where and made his own way. You have to respect that.
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ I have never been nervous about going on stage. It is my “safe” place… my sanity in a sometimes crazy world.
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ My first meeting with a major label. The meeting went so incredibly well they loved my songs and music. It was such a very cool moment. They gave me a couple of things they wanted me to do and they keep in touch. Love it and love this country music industry.
