About The Honeycutters

Why country music ?
~ I don’t think it’s ever been a stylistic choice or something we’ve looked for. Country music was the first music I heard as a child, and the soundtrack to most family car trips. I don’t know how to define Country Music, but I think that what we do is often categorized that way because we have a pedal steel, and a mandolin, and we don’t get too fancy.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ I don’t know that it gets any better than George and Tammy.

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ That is a tough question. I think I’ll say “Irene,” which is the title track off our first album. I feel like that’s the first song I ever wrote that people really knew the words to, and it’s about my childhood so that’s important.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ I don’t really know. I can’t imagine how it would be to have someone write a song that was specifically meant for me to sing…I would feel weird if I didn’t like it or wanted to change something. I think I’d rather just pick and choose when I hear something I like. We don’t do a lot of covers. If the question is, who would I like to write a song for me just to have, and be about me, the answer is Tom Petty.

Whisky wine beer or …?
~ There’s a time and a place for everything. I’m really not a big whiskey drinker anymore though.

Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ I think it’s called “Shake for me girl?” But there’s a bunch like that I could do without.

What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ I honestly have no idea. I’m not sure I’ve ever had a specific question I wanted to be asked. I tend to ramble, and go on tangents, so I can usually find a way to say anything I want to get said in an interview.

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ It’s a lot about vibe for me. And that’s more about who you’re working with than where you are, I think.

Johnny or June ?
~ Both. Why choose?

Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ I get nervous every so often, but not unless we’re doing something that’s being recorded live. My ritual seems to be telling embarrassing stories about myself.

What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ The first time I ever performed a song I wrote. It was an open mic and there were four or five people in the audience, no one was paying attention. And I sucked. Real bad. But I told myself I knew I could do better, and so I like to think about that now.
