Exclusive Interview with Jessica Rae

Jessica Rae

About Jessica Rae

Why country music ?
~ Country music tells a story. And, my rapping skills are sub-par.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ I believe Patsy Cline and Josh Turner would have a beautiful combination of style and vocal blend.

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ “Why I Never Run”, off of my new album “Freedom Avenue”. The lyrics, “Why I Never Run, why I choose to stand up to the pain, I’ve always been the one not afraid to turn and face the bullet from the gun, I’d rather know where it came from, that’s why I never run.” I have definitely made my share of mistakes, wrong choices, bad decisions, and I ultimately have to stand and face the consequences. I’m not afraid of confrontation and I stand for what I believe in. This is a personal anthem for me and will continue to live by it each day.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Fortunately, I’ve been able to write with some of my favorite writers! If I had to choose a writer off the top of my head, it would be Hillary Lindsey.

Whisky wine beer or water?
~ Whiskey before dinner, wine during dinner, and beer is nice after a gig.

If you could turn back time to make only one change, what would you change?
~ As cliché as it sounds, I wouldn’t change anything. Any kind of hardships I’ve overcome have made me a stronger person.

What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ What’s the greatest story of a fan that you have?
I was singing my song “Keep On” at a charity event and a girl came up to me afterwards and told me how much those lyrics meant to her. She had been suffering from an eating disorder and the song reminded her that through tough times you have to “Keep On”. These kind of moments, where a song can touch someone so deeply to where they have to say something to you, they are moved to tears, laughter, or any deep emotion, is a songwriters dream. I found out a little later that she tattooed the words “Keep On” on her shoulder as another reminder for her.

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ As the artist, my job is to hire the right engineer for the project at hand and trust that they will take care of the recording studio. “Freedom Avenue” was recorded on a Custom Discrete Neve 8058’s automated with 52 inputs. The studio was comfortable with amazing musicians. We recorded with no time constraints and this made the recording very creative and experimental until we came up with the final product.

Johnny or June ?
~ Johnny. I love his “I don’t give a damn” style and his lyrics of his songs are dark and honest. His delivery of each song makes you believe every word.

Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ The only gig I get nervous for these days is when I sing the National Anthem for a sporting event. No real “rituals” except for absolute denial. I make sure to distract myself, not over think what I’m doing, and count on my experience to guide me.

What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ Most memorable moment in my career was last year when my fans pulled together and helped raise money to help me record my new CD, “Freedom Avenue”. In under 25 days, my fans raised over $17,000. With a lot of hard work, the time and effort put forth of everyone involved, and ultimately listening to the finalized CD was so memorable and so rewarding, I am overwhelmed with joy and gratitude to everyone involved.
