Exclusive Interview with Julia Cole

Julia Cole

About Julia Cole

Why country music ?
~ Born and raised in Houston, TX, I grew up listening to country music. On top of that, both of my parents are from Louisiana (Jennings and Lafayette), where I spent every holiday visiting my family. Needless to say, four-wheelers, pee-frog catching, Grandy’s mac’n’cheese, and Maudie’s sweet tea played a huge role in connecting me to country music. However, H-Town is the hub for many other genres too. I played sports with many diverse teammates that broadened my horizons to include hip-hop, R&B, pop, and EDM among others. All of these influences have affected my music: The storytelling and lyricism in country music are the core of my work and elements from other genres add energy and spice up the tracks. I see no boundaries when creating music.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Zac Brown and Carrie Underwood

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ #GetAwesome, my newest release, is a song inspired by the adventures my best friend and I have been on throughout our past four years in college. Every time I hear it, I think about the importance of cherishing the two months I have left of college and taking advantage of the remainder of my time with all of the amazing friends I’ve made at Vanderbilt.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Jeffrey Steele!

Whisky wine beer or water?
~ Cinnamon Whiskey #FIREBALLLLL

What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ What underlying goals do I have beyond music?
I am so thankful for my formative experiences in sports, and I’d love to encourage more young girls to participate in athletics. I truly believe in the qualities instilled in athletes, like teamwork, hard work, and perseverance. These traits go far to build confidence and are the tools for success in virtually every part of life.

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ That’s an easy one: THE HOLLER. The studio I’m recording in currently is my heaven. Located in a woodsy valley down a long gravel driveway in Bellevue, the studio is completely removed from society. The privacy and natural feel allow creativity to run wild and deter outside influences from tainting our (my producer’s and my) vision.

Johnny or June ?
~ June! The Carter Family changed the game and June is amazing. (5 Grammy Awards = GIRL POWER)

Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ I never feel nervous if I’m prepared. I sang my first big National Anthem at the Houston Texans’ NFL season closer as a junior in high school in front of 75,000 people and somehow didn’t have nerves. I was just excited! I love the feeling of holding the microphone and performing in front of an audience.

What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ I received a Facebook message from a girl asking me to write a song for her mother who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. I wrote “Beautiful Fighter”, a song about defying odds, believing in prayer, and having hope, and happily agreed to perform it at her benefit fundraiser. The mother had no idea a song had been written for her and was absolutely in shock. There wasn’t a dry eye in the entire building. That day taught me the true power and meaning behind songwriting and performing. I’m beyond excited to report that she is currently cancer free!!!!
