Exclusive Interview with Kayla Calabrese

About Kayla Calabrese

Why country music ?
~ I love all genres of music, but country music is always where I gravitated towards. I love the down to earth, and story-telling aspects of country music.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ The ultimate county duet for me would be Loretta Lynn and Chris Stapelton. Hands down two of the most soulful voices in country music today.

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ My current single out now would have to be the song right now that means the most to me. It came from a funny story, and has such a different sound than what I usually do.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Brandi Carlile. She’s a lyrical genius.

Whisky wine beer or …?
~ Depends on my mood and the setting, but if I have to choose, you can never go wrong with a glass of Riesling

Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ This is a hard one that I can’t answer, because I have yet to hear a country song I dislike. I don’t just listen to the melody or the production of a song, I listen to every lyric and in country music especially, I think everyone can relate to the lyrics in one way or another.

What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ What life for me is really like, because I am not only pursing my music career, but I am an ER nurse as well. I love what I do, so I wish people asked about that part of my life more. 🙂

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ Blackbird here in Nashville, I’ve never been there but I’ve heard about it and I’ve seen pictures. They have a room where there is not one piece of wood the same size coming out of the wall, and a room where the ceiling moves up and down. The sounds that come out of there are incredible. It is a dream of mine to record there.

Johnny or June ?
~ Wow this is hard, but I’d have to pick June for her strength, love and perseverance in her relationship with Johnny Cash, and her voice and stage presence were undeniable.

Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ I still get very nervous before going on stage (probably a little too nervous), but right before I go on I need to take a minute or two just by myself. No insane rituals or anything haha.

What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ The most memorable day in my musical career so far would have the be tracking day on my most recent EP ‘Glass Stiletto’ releasing to iTunes May 3rd. I was in the studio with incredible musicians and an amazing producer. I recorded at Starstruck Studios here in Nashville, TN, being among the musicians was a humbling and rewarding experience.
