Exclusive Interview with Larry Scott Chapman

About Larry Scott Chapman

  • Interview date: July 17, 2011

Why country music ?
~ Well I love music in general and I have a great respect for all types of it. I was exposed to a lot of different genres as a child. Being the youngest of five children I had older brothers and a sister that listened to everything from 60’s psychedelic to pop to southern rock. My Mama loved gospel and my Daddy was straight up country. I started writing songs when I was about fifteen years old and at first my tunes were all over the place. As I grew older and started to really develop my craft as a songwriter I found myself drawn to songs that had a story to tell. When you listen to my lyric’s now I think that the subject matter is very literal, and to me honest stories about real people is what country was built on. So I feel very proud to be a part of that now.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Well hell I think they already sang it. For me it was Keith Whitley and Lorrie Morgan doing Till Each Tear Becomes a Rose. How could you top that?

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ There is a song off of my album Once In A Blue Moon that I released back in 2006 called Thank You Father. My Mama didn’t live long enough to ever hear it, but I think if she had it would have been her favorite of all and that makes it mine.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Hands down my favorite song writer of all time is Steve Earle. Nobody I’ve ever heard with maybe the exception of John Prine can say the most with the least amount of words.

Whisky wine beer or water?
~ Well I’d have to say that water is probably always the best choice for anyone. But when I do drink alcohol I usually prime the pump with a couple of beers but I always end up with my old friend Whisky.

What is the question interviewers never asked you while you were always hoping they would. (and give us your answer)?
~ Question: If we were to stop this interview right now and offer you a million dollars, your own private island, a fishing vessel manned by sun baked local beauties, and all the weed and whiskey you could handle for the rest of your life would you give up your career as a country music artist?
Answer: …..I’d think about it.

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ Tall ceilings and wood floors with a passionate producer that that loved the same kind of music that I do. Also a cut room full of vintage Fender, Gibson, and Gretch guitars all hot wired to a Dumble Overdrive Special.

Johnny or June ?
~ Both, one would not be the same without the other.

Give us your top 3 country songs ever.
~ I love so many it’s like picking a needle in a haystack but the first three that come to mind are David Allan Coe – Long Haired Red Neck, Steve Earle – Tom Ames’ Prayer, and a new artist that I can’t get enough of Jamey Johnson – The High Cost Of Living.

We love to bring our readers exclusive scoops, so what would you like to share with our readers?
~ I am happy to be recording a new album right now with some of the people that I started out making music with when I was a kid. I’ve been trying to find my way back to my roots and reconnect with the place that this whole thing started. It has been exciting and scary all at the same time. There are a lot of fond memories and just as many ghosts floating around the little town that I came from. I really do feel in my heart that I am doing the right thing. I hope it shows in my new music.
