Why country music ?
~ It was ingrained in my musical DNA from the time I can remember. Growing up on a ranch way out in the country we couldn’t get TV, but we had a record player, so the records my parents had got played over and over. Buck Owen, Cash, Carter Family etc. The music found it’s way into my soul.
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included), which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Patsy Cline and Ray Charles. It would have been timeless magic.
What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ “Hard Times for An Honest Man” I co/wrote and recorded it when I was living in LA right after watching the CMA awards. My publisher sent it to Tony Brown who ran MCA records at the time and he signed me to the label based on that song. Changed my life.
Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Burt Bacharch.
Whisky wine beer or …?
Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ Leanne Womacks “I may hate myself in the Morning” because it’s so good I feel like I need to stop whatever I’m doing and go back to songwriting school. If such a school existed.
What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ What’s your idea of a great friend.
Answer: One who has jumper cables.
Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ RCA Studio A Nashville. The room becomes part of the creative aether.
Johnny or June ?
~ Johnny: Because he’s Johnny Cash.
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ I still get the butterflies before shows. It wouldn’t seem normal if I didn’t have them. As soon as the music kicks in the nerves go away.
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ I’d have to say when “A Broken Wing” went #1. 20 years after its release it still gets sung by young up and coming singers. American Idol and The Voice this year already.
