Why country music ?
~ Country music is the voice of the south. It’s where some of the greatest stories in all music reside. There are definitely aspects of country music in everything I do. My voice and the context of my lyrics will always be laced with country music.
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Vern Gosdin and Keith Whitley would be my choices. Two of my favorite voices of all time.
What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ Feathers. I didn’t have to change or add anything for theatrical effect. That song is me.
Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ I’d much rather be writing my own.
What is the one thing that readers/fans would be surprised to know about you?
~ I love The Smiths and Joy Division. I also love pretty much everything a synthesizer can do.
Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ Bait a Hook by Justin Moore. It is everything that is wrong with the “pop country” world. Ignorant lines like “I bet he drives a Prius” do nothing for the country music world. It just makes outsiders laugh and wonder who’s in charge.
What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ What my favorite films are? My music stems from film and theater. I’m all about creating cinematic events and atmosphere in my music. Here’s my answer. Badlands, The Last Picture Show, Raging Bull and the Chet Baker documentary Let’s Get Lost.
Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ My dream studio is one that gets back to the basics. Less modern technology and more soul. Thankfully I lucked out with the studio I’ve used the last three years. It has everything. The Station House in Echo Park, California.
Johnny or June ?
~ You can’t have one without the other. No June, no Johnny. June Carter guided Cash through some very rough times. I can’t choose. They are both way to important and necessary.
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ I usually listen to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Run Through the Jungle. I no longer get nervous. I feel more comfortable onstage than off.
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ Playing The Troubadour. So many of my heroes have played there. It was an incredible experience.
