About Matt Westin

  • Interview date: December 29, 2017

  • Country: USA (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

Why country music ?
~ Besides the fact that I have always enjoyed it and my voice is suited for country music, I love that country music tells a story. It paints a picture. I also think it’s still probably the most wholesome mainstream music genre left, with more traditional values, and masculinity is still allowed.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ It’s hard to choose, because each one means a lot to me. But my first single “Our Redneck Of The Woods” has probably taken that spot. It is a great song and celebrates a lot of what I stand for. God, country, family, helping others, standing up for your beliefs, and having pride in where you’re from are all part of this song. The response I’ve gotten for this debut single has been so humbling and exciting.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ Willie Nelson

What is the one thing that readers/fans would be surprised to know about you?
~ I turn to mush when it comes to little kids and animals. I’m a big softy.

Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ Body Like A Back Road, because it’s not really country music and I have heard it ten thousand times in the past year. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good song, but don’t play it on country radio. I heard it on a pop channel in Orlando, Florida a few months ago and I think that’s the type of channel it should stay on.

What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ Boxers or briefs? Answer: Boxer briefs

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ It would include a coffee shop, a massage chair, and a sushi bar.

Johnny or June ?
~ Johnny. I love his story and his voice and the larger than life aura that just surrounds the name of Johnny Cash.

Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ Absolutely. It’s a combination of nerves and an adrenaline rush from being excited. It’s like a jolt of the strongest espresso on the planet. Usually a little whiskey takes the edge off.

What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ When I finished the lead vocals on my debut album. I took the headphones off and I had to just take a little walk and let it sink in before I went back into the control room or talked to my producer. I had to go have a word with God and my dad up there in heaven and say thank you and I love you and I know you’d be so proud.
