Exclusive Interview with Moot Davis

Moot Davis

About Moot Davis

Why country music ?
~ Well, country music for a few reasons. My mother and father’s families are both from West Virginia, from small coal mining and logging towns. My father’s father ran moonshine before world war II started and my mother’s father worked in a saw mill before the war. Country music was the soundtrack to their lives. After the war, they both relocated to New Jersey and started raising families carrying over the love for the music they grew up with. So, the country music was around in the house and defiantly around on the summer trips that I took with my mother’s parents to the American south. Now, when I started to write songs with a guitar in my mid twenties, country music was the easiest style to play and write to. Two or three chords, and when I started writing, it was just really country sounding. You hear people say music is in their DNA, I’m not sure about that but it defiantly started out and has remained country music.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ This is a really tough question. As much as I’m into "waking the dead", I believe the great duets of the past really still stand out as the best of the best. Though, I just recorded my first duet "Crazy In Love With You", on the new album "Man About Town" with Elizabeth Cook. That was a lot of fun and I think it came out really well.

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ It’s not on any released album but I wrote and recorded a song for my mom called "The Reason". It was a Christmas present for her when I first moved to Nashville in 2001.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ I’m not sure, I’ve never though about it. I write all the songs because that’s my strong point, so I’m not sure.

Whisky wine beer or water?
~ Ha, all three are good! I really love getting to travel all over the world with music. I have favorite bars in different places like the Beverly Hills Hotel bar, the Polo Lounge or in Amsterdam, the hotel De L’Europe bar, the bar at the Napoleon Hotel in Paris and the Hotel Bon Sol in Mallorca, Spain. Whiskey, wine, beer, vodka, scotch and champagne are great wherever you are.

If you could turn back time to make only one change, what would you change?
~ This has nothing to do with music, but I would change the assassination of JFK. The truth is that the US has been marching on the road towards fascism ever since his untimely death in 1963.

What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ Q: You share the same birthday as Vincent Van Gogh, March 30th, are you concerned that you like Van Gogh will only find wide spread success posthumously? A: Yes. However, he died fairly young and if he had lived longer, into his 50’s maybe, things would have been different. So I guess the idea is to keep pushing and stay alive!

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ Unfortunately, I am the worst person to ask about this. I am not very savvy technically and the best best studios for me are the ones where I feel comfortable and everything works and no time is wasted.

Johnny or June ?
~ Both are amazing, but as a male singer I identify with Johnny.

Give us your top 3 country songs ever.
~ Conway Twitty "Hello Darlin", Hank Williams "Your Cheatin’ Heart" and "Ramblin’ Man"

What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ I got invited to the premiere of the film "Crash" in Hollywood, I had a song in the film. I took my brother Mike and we just had the best time, it was really special, we got very drunk and just had a blast. I was glad I got to share that with my little brother.
