About Rye Brothers

  • Interview date: October 15, 2015

PJ = Paul Justin
JF = Justin Foutz

Why country music ?
~ PJ: Honestly, country music fits me completely. I played in other genres for several years but I just felt like I was home with country.
~ JF: Country isn’t all that we’re about. We definitely mix it up a little with some of the other things that have influenced us. We are playing Power Pop Country and it has elements from pop and rock music as well.

If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
~ PJ: Probably Dolly Parton and Gretchen Wilson.
~ JF: Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Bryant

What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
~ PJ: “Enjoy The Rain” probably means the most to me because it’s a song about letting go of the things you can’t fix in your life. Me and Justin say “Enjoy the Rain” to each other when we know there’s nothing more to do….
~ JF: “Dancing With The Devil” was my first Nashville recording and was about me growing up without my parents around and making bad choices.

Who would you like to write a song for you?
~ PJ & JF: We really prefer to write all our own material. However, it wouldn’t be a specific writer that we would like, it would be a song.

Whisky wine beer or water?
~ JF: Whiskey for sure!
~ PJ: It really all depends on the occasion. I like all three! When I’m hanging out with my dad and brother, we like to have a glass of port.

Give us one country song you never want to hear on radio anymore and tell us why.
~ PJ & JF: Everyone has songs that they dislike for different reasons. We would prefer to keep away from being anything.

What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and…you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ PJ & JF: Honestly we’ve heard just about every question there is. Nothing really comes to mind.

Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ PJ & JF: The two legendary studios that stick out to us are pretty simple. Abbey Road and Muscle Shoals.

Johnny or June ?
~ PJ: This question isn’t very fair! They were both awesome! If I had to choose I would say Johnny because I’m more attached to his songs.
~ JF: Johnny. He was a rebel. I have a tendency to go a little rogue when we do shows.

Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm you nerves.
~ PJ: I don’t get too nervous anymore but when I do I try to psych myself out by remembering how many times I’ve done this and just go do what you always do and you’ll be fine.
~ JF: I still get nervous a lot. I’m not sure it will ever go away. A little whiskey helps!

How would you like to spend a day with each other when you are not allowed to do anything that has something to do with music?
~ JF: Sitting on a boat with our families and friends on a lake or a river. Nothing beats that.
